Dear SoNo Community

My name is Dr. Alycia Rhinehart. As the principal of the SoNoSchool, I come to you as an educator who has spent the last two decades serving communities of children and families in elementary school, early childhood programs, and middle school.

As your school’s founding principal, my ears will be open to listen, my eyes will stay focused on supporting each student's growth and development and my doors will be open to welcome your communication and input.

On behalf of Dr. Estrella, myself and the Norwalk Public Schools leadership team, welcome to the new South Norwalk Community School on Concord Street.  Your new community school will open its doors to Prekindergarten and Kindergarten students and families on Tuesday, August 31!

We look forward to growing the school in partnership with you.  Your community school will begin its journey at 46 Concord Street (formerly known as the Columbus Magnet School).  Once our school’s state-of-the-art facility is completed, we will move to our permanent home on Meadow Street in South Norwalk.

South Norwalk’s Prekindergarten and Kindergarten students will step into history when they come to school on Tuesday, August 31, 2022 at 8:00am.  In order to give our SoNo children and families time to get to know the school and make arrangements for school, the SoNo Community School will offer the following half-day schedule for our students:

Prekindergarten

• Wednesday, August 31​​8am - 12noon
• Thursday, September 1​​8am - 12noon
• Friday, September 2​​​8am - 12noon
• Tuesday, September 6​​8am - 2:50pm (full day)

Kindergarten

• Wednesday, August 31​​8am - 12noon
• Thursday, September 1​​8am - 12noon
• Friday, September 2​​​8am - 2:50pm (full day)
• Tuesday, September 6​​8am - 2:50pm (full day)

Ideas for the First Day/First Week of School

• On the first day of school, families may want to bring a full change of clothing for their child, including socks, pants or skirt, a shirt, and undergarments.  We will keep your child’s change of clothing in school so that there is always something on hand for children to wear, just in case…
• Children may also want to bring a stuffed toy or a family photograph to keep close to them as they adjust to being in school.  The start of the school year can be emotional for children.  We want to be sure that each child has something they can hold on to from home while they are in school.
• Families should intend to spend some time in the classroom with their child(ren).  The first day of school is a time of transition and change.  Families are welcome to accompany children and spend time in the classroom with their child(ren).
• Taking a photograph might be a fun way to celebrate the first day of school.  Teachers and other children and families may want to join in taking a photograph to make it a fun experience for everyone, especially our children.

The SoNo Community School envisions its work as preparing children for the future and ensuring that each child receives an equitable and excellent education so that they can be globally engaged and contributors to society-at-large.

This is just the beginning of a great adventure for all of us as we keep students, our children, as the top priority for the work ahead.  I look forward to meeting each and every one of you.

Ideas para el primer día/primera semana de clases

• El primer día de clases, es posible que las familias deseen traer una muda completa de ropa para su hijo, incluidos calcetines, pantalones o falda, una camisa y ropa interior.
